Frida Kahlo and Rihanna have two things in common—they’re both badass artists, and they both rock heavy bushy eyebrows in their portraits. With almost 300,000 likes already, Rihanna just posted the cover art for a new release tomorrow on Instagram. Just as she crooned and crossed over genres in the single “FourFiveSeconds,” her almost-unibrow, slicked hair, and dark lip game is reminiscent of Mexican painter Kahlo. Kahlo, who was famous for her self-portraits in the first half of the 20th century, painted herself with a unibrow in order to challenge gendered and old-fashioned perceptions of beauty and femininity. Like Rihanna in this portrait, Kahlo always looked straight at the viewer, confronting the audience with serene and confident boldness.

While Kahlo was self-styled, Rihanna definitely has a huge team behind this look. But from Cara Delevingne to Brooke Shields to RiRi to Kahlo, it seems that bold eyebrows are a beauty statement of strong, independent women.
