President Obama Talks Green Lipstick with Top Beauty Bloggers

Leave it to two of our favorite YouTube stars, GloZell Green and Bethany Mota, to sit down and interview President Obama in lime green lipstick and metallic eye makeup. Last night, our outspoken beauty-conscious vloggers—including tech vlogger Hank Green—spoke to the President about race relations, financing education (the perfect opportunity to talk about his proposal to offer Americans two free years of community college), Obamacare, diplomatic relations, and marijuana.

Fresh off his State of the Union address, President Obama met with these three YouTube stars in order to encourage their young audiences to get involved in politics. “Politics is really not all that complicated. It’s what we do everyday with friends and with family,” he told Mota. “They negotiate, they compromise. They try to figure out, how do we live together?”

GloZell, known for her green lipstick, made a bold move in gifting President Obama three green lipsticks for his wife, Michelle, and two daughters, Malia and Sasha. “I’m going to ask Michelle to try it on—maybe tonight,” he accepted with a sly grin. For President Obama, reaching out to the 14 million+ subscribers of these three top YouTube stars was worth the prospect of bringing green lipstick to the White House.

In the 1800s, women were discouraged from reading newspapers, so women’s magazines became their forum. Likewise, in the 21st century, YouTube is a portal for young people who don’t relate with traditional media. It’s a testament to the power of vloggers, even the ones who make entertaining videos about makeup and lifestyle, that they were selected to speak to the President on behalf of their internet-savvy generation.  All three vloggers read questions and brought up concerns from their readers, asking Obama to speak honestly to an audience that loves tech, humor, and beauty—but also wants to make a positive difference in the world. Here’s to the girls who know how to put on false eyelashes and discuss diplomatic relations with Cuba.
