This Is What One French Woman Really Eats for One Week

In honor of Bastille Day, Yahoo Style and Yahoo Beauty are examining what it means to be a “French girl” — the myths, fantasies, and realities that all help define that certain je ne sais quoi. What’s vrai, what’s faux, and what’s a total faux pas? Read on.

People, namely Americans, are obsessed with the way French women eat — and, not to mention, fascinated by their consumption of rich and decadent foods and seemingly effortless ability to maintain slim physiques. But according to Philly-born and Paris-based food and travel writer Lindsey Tramuta, “French women come from an innately more healthy perspective on food, based on moderation.” She told Yahoo Beauty, “They’ll give into indulgence and not kick themselves for it later.”

This philosophy on eating and living piqued her curiosity and inspired Tramuta to write about her surroundings and food adventures as she connected with her adopted city on a “deeper level.” For the past decade, she has lived in France and racked up bylines for print and digital publications such as the New York Times, Condé Nast Traveler, Wall Street Journal, and Bon Appétit.

Her favorite early French food memory is actually a toss-up between finding herself “faced with paralyzing indecision in front of the most divine baked goods” she had ever seen and taking her cheese palate “well beyond basic cheeses.” As she said, “It wouldn’t be hyperbolic to call my first experience with aged Comté and Beaufort cheeses a revelation.”

We knew for sure that Tramuta would be the perfect person to share what a French woman really eats when she revealed that her three favorite French foods/dishes are steak frites (specifically the version served at La Bourse et la Vie in Paris), rustic sourdough bread (not baguette!), and cheese (“It makes every meal better.”).
