Jeremy Scott, the American fashion designer who started his career dressing musical iconoclasts like Björk and most recently dressed Miley Cyrus at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards, presented his eponymous label’s Spring 2016 collection today. The standout hair and makeup look was inspired by 1980s East Village party girls who rocked ‘60s silhouettes. Another unlikely reference? “I’m also inspired by Josie at the Pussycats,” lead makeup artist Kabuki, working with MAC Cosmetics, told Yahoo Beauty. “But that’s probably just me looking back in hindsight.” The bouffant updo wigs were designed by hairstylist Eugene Souleiman for Wella. Known for creating Lady Gaga’s bob, the stylist told us “bigger is better” for this look. Models like Gigi Hadid and Soo Joo Park walked the show.

While Scott wanted a strong and wild beauty look, Kabuki didn’t want to do another strong-brows-and-spider-lashes look. He first prepped the skin with a sheer layer of MAC Studio Waterweight Foundation ($33) and MAC Studio Finish Concealer ($19). The brows are not sketched in — they’re just groomed with MAC Clear Brow Set ($17). Instead of using mascara on the lashes, he drew inner lashes and winged eyelashes (inspired by Amy Winehouse) with MAC Blacktrack Fluidline ($17), MAC On the Hunt Superslick Eye Liner ($21), and MAC Liquidlast Point Black ($21). Handmade stencils were used to create the mini triangles. If you want to attempt the look on your own, Kabuki recommends starting with a cream liner and then re-lining with a liquid liner to sharpen the details. The custom lip color, a bright matte coral, was created by mixing three MAC Lipmix colors.

“Strength comes in different forms, you know?” Kabuki explains. “This is a look that is as much about inner beauty and vulnerability as it is about standing out. The feeling is strong individuality and a fascination with counterculture.”
