Going makeup-free is completely on trend in celebrity circles right now, with both Alicia Keys and Alessia Cara attending the MTV Video Music Awards completely bare-faced.

While Keys may be the celebrity pioneer for the makeup-free movement, a few other famous faces have joined in as well, most notably fashion designer Nicole Richie. Although Richie is known for her creations for her line, House of Harlow 1960, she doesn’t tend to experiment much with makeup.

“I stay away from makeup because it clogs my skin,” she said in an interview with People. To avoid a controversy similar to the one caused by Keys’s choice to go makeup-free, Richie clarified her feelings for makeup by saying, “I know people who are so comfortable in makeup and they feel alive and that is what they love to do. So I wouldn’t say that I am against it because I know people that really get joy and feel the most like themselves when they put on makeup. I feel the most like myself when I don’t have any on, and so that’s the road that I go down.”

Considering makeup can actually clog pores and cause breakouts, Richie’s reasoning makes a lot of sense for the skin-care-conscious. She’s also clearly very proud of how she looks sans makeup since she posts no-makeup selfies often.

While Richie’s decision is clearly a personal preference coupled with her consciousness regarding skin health, her addition to the makeup-free movement appears much different from Keys’s self-proclaimed no-makeup “revolution.” When Keys explained her reasoning for going makeup-free in Lenny Letter, it was more about distancing herself from using makeup as a way to cover up who she is, which is why many felt she was shaming people who truly enjoy wearing makeup.

Since Hollywood is full of glitz and glam, we’re surprised at how the no-makeup trend is picking up among celebrities. Considering the no-makeup look (wearing makeup to look like you’re not wearing makeup) was major last year, we should have guessed the real thing would be heading our way soon after.
