Why is Christian Louboutin's New Nail Polish $675?

If you’re a nail polish aficionado, wait until you see what Christian Louboutin has created for the holidays.

Starlight, a special limited-edition bottle of Rouge Louboutin polish, is a showstopper of a beauty product. The bottle is adorned with 1,500 hand-applied Strass crystals—the same high-end crystals used in the designer’s famous shoes. Surrounded by velvet, the bottle sits inside a lacquer-finish box topped off with two leather-and-crystal flowers to match this season’s $1,395 Pensamoi pumps. As for the nail color itself, it’s the same signature red as the designer uses on his famous soles.

If all of this razzle-dazzle is tempting you to pick up this objet d’art, you’ll need to know two things. First, because each package is hand-decorated, only a relatively small number of bottles were produced—so shop quickly if you’re going to do it. Second, this level of luxury comes at a price to match. Each Starlight bottle is $675, a fact that has outraged some Sephora shopper-reviewers. “For $675, you can buy Christian Louboutin shoes,” one wrote. “I think that would be a better use of your money.”

Possibly so, but Louboutin loyalists are unlikely to let a little thing like money stop them. As for others? Well, we’re guessing that for some people, $50 for a bottle of Louboutin polish will suddenly seem like a bargain in comparison. And if you only care about wearing red on your nails, hey, we hear the drugstore has some pretty good reds as well.
