Louboutins For Your Lips Are Here

By Megan Mctinyre

Say you’re a world-famous luxury shoe designer who has adorned the feet of pretty much every bold-faced name’s Botoxed feet. You’ve reached icon status in the fashion world and are in the one-name club alongside the likes of Cher and Beyoncé. Where do you go from here? Why, you create a lipstick line, of course!

Alright, maybe that jump isn’t technically a natural progression, but that’s exactly what Christian Louboutin is doing. After launching a signature nail polish collection last year, the designer has just revealed a lipstick collection that is going to make any makeup junkie’s pulse race — and her bank account cower in fear.

The line features 38 shades in three different textures — Silky Satin, Velvet Matte, and Sheer Voile — that are inspired by Louboutin handbags and shoes. As with any of Louboutin’s products, the lipsticks are works of art, inspired by everything from Babylonian architecture to Art Deco to Middle Eastern antiquities. To us, they look like bullets or mermaids’ tails were dipped in precious metal and then capped off with headgear stolen from the Crown Jewels. Kind of badass.

Speaking of stolen, that’s exactly the word Louboutin uses to describe the lipsticks. “This precious object will be coveted by others. Suggesting a purse full of rare and precious stones that could have been discovered in Ali Baba’s cave, it will arouse lust and desire…and is made to be stolen.” Disclaimer: This does not give you permission to snatch someone’s lipstick out of their hands when they go to reapply. Please don’t steal someone’s Louboutin Lipstick.

There are 20 shades in the Silky Satin collection, which offers a medium-to-full-coverage lip color with a satin finish and hint of shine. Velvet Matte features nine colors, is highly pigmented, and has a soft, matte finish. Sheer Voile also comes in nine shades, with a sheer finish for a veil of color with “luminous shine.”

And, because no color collection would be complete without it, each collection contains a signature Rouge Louboutin shade as one of its offerings. Those signature shades will be housed in a black lacquer case, unlike the rest of the line’s golden packaging.

The lipsticks clock in at a cool $90 and will be available in September at Saks. Another cool feature is that the cap comes with a small ring at the top through which a ribbon is threaded, so you can turn it into a necklace. So, lipstick jewelry. Listen, we’ll try to find a way to justify this purchase by any means necessary, okay?

We’ll leave you with this quote from Louboutin to put you in the mood. “After the eyes, lips represent the most expressive element of the face. And there’s the fetish appeal, because lipstick can transform a face from intense to naive or even dangerous. When a woman carries a handbag, we look at her shoulders. When she slips on a pair of heels, we observe her walk. If she applies lacquer to her nails, we admire her hands. With its slow, circular application, lip makeup becomes a rich and sensual gesture.” Phew. Is it hot in here, or is it just us?
