Newlyweds Ciara and her husband, Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, made their first postwedding red carpet appearance at Wednesday night’s ESPY Awards, and they did not disappoint. Ciara has brought glamour to the red carpet since her debut, but she has really upped her game in the past year.

Stylist and Mizani global artistic director César Ramirez has been creating Ciara’s hair looks for most of the events, and he broke down how to copy her faux bob for Yahoo Beauty.

“For her Espy look, I wanted to try something very different from what we’ve done in the past,” he said. “Ciara’s dress was very elegant, and although I wanted a polished look, I still wanted to keep it young and fun. Once I saw the cut of the beautiful Cavalli dress, I knew I wanted to play around with a faux bob.”

Starting on dry hair, he prepped it for for blow-drying by using Mizani Thermastrength Heat Protecting Serum to protect the strands from heat damage. He then blew the hair out till it gained more body.

When done, he back-combed the roots starting at the lowest section and worked his way up to the crown. This technique creates a cushion once you begin pinning up the hair.

He then rolled up the ends of her hair and pinned the sections under to create the shape of the bob, brushing the top section of hair over the pinned portion, allowing her short layers to hide the teased and pinned bits underneath and really take the shape of a bob.

To finish, he used his One Styling flatiron to add waves around Ciara’s face and sprayed Mizani HRM to provide hold and prevent frizz throughout the evening.
