#IfSelfiesNeverExisted We Wouldn't Have Any of These Monumental Pictures

People are seriously freaking out on Twitter over the trending hashtag #IfSelfiesNeverExisted. We know, scary thought. The trend is inciting hilarious responses from both lovers and haters of the famous selfie, which has got us thinking about what we’d be missing if the beloved photo tactic was never created.

According to Dictionary.com, a selfie is “a photograph taken with a smartphone or other digital camera by a person who is also in the photograph, especially for posting on a social-media website.” These websites have evolved into apps today like Instagram and Snapchat, but we can’t forget the OG of social networking, MySpace. The Huffington Post compiled “A Brief History of the Selfie” where they included the 2006 introduction of the networking site, and the “selfies” that ensued. And while these selfies are now outdated with the emergence of new technology and technique, we have to where and how it all started.

In the decade since MySpace’s creation, both social networking and selfie-taking have developed through technology and pop culture, providing them with (some) societal value. So, in order to celebrate, here are the selfies and selfie accessories of epic importance that we probably wouldn’t have today #IfSelfiesNeverExisted.
