Gucci Confirms the Sweaty, Flushed Highlighter Look Is Here to Stay

Gucci’s Fall/Winter 2017 collection was shown in Milan on Wednesday, and the brand’s creative director, Alessandro Michele, declared the collection “anti-modern.” Drawing inspiration from countless cultures, models sporting ornate baroque patterns, silk parasols, revamped ’80s-style T-shirts, and ’70s-esque sweatbands paraded around an Egyptian-inspired pyramid.

The beauty looks on the runway were no exception, with exaggerated Farrah Fawcett waves, Bowie-esque makeup, and teardrop face jewels. But one modern theme resonated throughout the show — highlighter isn’t going anywhere.

Every model wearing a sweatband was also painted with a dewy flush that gave them a post-exercise glow. Many also had oily hair and subtle darkness around their eyes.

Makeup artists alternated between Gucci Sheer Blushing Powder in Pink Camelia and Gucci Lip Luxurious Moisture-Rich Lipstick in Fiery Fuchsia, blended across the tops of the cheeks towards the temples to highlight and define cheekbones.

The eclectic styles at the show comment on modern culture as a regurgitation of the past, but even Alessandro Michele couldn’t resist including everybody’s favorite beauty trend: a glistening highlight.
