She’s been here all night, ladies and gentlemen. Ariana Grande rocked her signature ponytail on the red carpet at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, as expected. But this year there was a little something extra going on: her new bangs made their red carpet debut. Also very exciting was her three-color ombre style, going from dark at the roots to lighter from the scalp down the ponytail to very light extensions at the bottom.

Grande worked with stylist Aaron Light to get the look, which he describes as a “continuation of this classic, chic style that works for everything.”

To get Grande’s look, Light start by dampening her hair and applying a small amount of Matrix Style Link Blow Out Big Queen. He then blew out her bangs using a 1-inch brush and put them into a 1-inch roller to get that slight bump off the forehead. If you’re recreating the look at home, but don’t have rollers, Light offers this tip: wrap the bangs around your fingers and then secure with a bobby pin. Then he dried the rest of her hair to a smooth texture.

Light then swept Grande’s hair up into a high ponytail using a brush and secured it with a hook bungee to create a tight pony and avoid slippage. Light recommends two bungees for girls with thick hair.

After the pony was in place, Light put a dime sized dollop of Matrix Style Link Shape Switcher on his fingertips and smoothed the hair away from the hairline, to control flyaways and smooth bumps. He achieved extra smoothness in Grande’s look by repeating this process with a barbering brush.

Finally, Light completed Grande’s high pony look by running random bits of her ponytail through a crimping iron, moving from the top to the bottom of the hair. He recommends using Matrix Style Link Mineral Booster Texture Booster before crimping for extra texture and volume.

“Being able to work with someone who’s hair is their signature in the way that Ariana’s is, is everything for a hairstylist,” Light said of creating her VMA look. “I love collaborating with her on new ways to interpret this iconic look.”
