Get Her Look: Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga’s performance of “Til It Happens to You” at the Oscars hardly left a dry eye in the house (or at home). It makes sense that the singer went for a look that was edgy without taking attention away from what was important: She wore a custom-made Brandon Maxwell pant-dress hybrid, an old Hollywood hairstyle, and warm, monochromatic makeup that played up her expressive eyes.

“After I saw the iconic white Brandon Maxwell creation, I got inspired by photographers like Helmut Newton and Guy Bourdin,” makeup artist Sarah Tanno said. “No specific photo, just the all-over vibe. I wanted everything to be monochromatic, bold and new, but something that would still feel timeless 10 years from now.”

Tanno prepped Gaga’s skin with Sisley Paris Radiant Glow Express Mask and Eye Contour Mask, removing it with a tissue, followed by applying Sisleÿa L’integral Face Cream all the way down to her neck and décolletage. She then used Sisley’s Phyto-Teint Expert in #1 as a base, and highlighted with Phyto-Cernes Eclat in #2.

“It has a nice peach tone that brightens with coverage, and a nice creamy texture,” Tanno said. She set that with Phyto-Poudre Libre loose powder. Photo-Touche Illusion D’ete in a bronze tone defined Gaga’s cheeks, while Phyto-Blush Eclat in Peach brought out the colors used around her eyes.

“The focus was the eye makeup,” Tanno said. The look she calls “monochromatic” may be a misnomer, though, because a lot of colors made up Gaga’s eye makeup. Tanno started by tracing the lids with Phyto-Eye Twist in Topaz, blended to the crease and under the eye. Next, she used Phyto-Ombre Eclat eyeshadow in Mango on the lids, and Toffee and Burgundy from the crease to the brow. Phyto-Ombre Glow in Pearl on the lids and under the brows, and Silver near the tear ducts, brightened and opened her eyes. To add more depth to the creases of Gaga’s eyes, Tanno added Satin Copper and Velvet Brown Phyto 4 Ombres Dream. Phyto-Khol Star in Smoked Topaz defined Gaga’s lash line. Tanno used her favorite mascara, So Intense, on her upper and lower lashes. She also traced Gaga’s brows with Blonde and Cappuccino eyebrow pencils.

“On the lips, I always prep with Nutritive Lip Balm; it’s super hydrating,” Tanno explained. “Try using this when you prep the skin to let it really absorb into the lips.”

For Gaga’s soft lip color, she lined them with Phyto-Levrés Perfect lip liner in Coral, blotted her lips, applied Hydrating Long Lasting lipstick in Petal, and blotted them again.

Tanno’s work didn’t end at the red carpet. To keep the star looking fresh throughout the night, Tanno touched up Gaga’s T-zone with Phyto-Poudre Compacte in #2.
