Fall Beauty Priorities: Streicher Secrets

Industry insiders and VIOLET GREY contributors, the Streicher sisters share their inspiration, advice and favorite products for autumn.

For their second Streicher sisters contributor file, Ashley, Jenn and Kristie, a trio of highly sought-after red carpet hair, makeup and brow artists, respectively, share their seasonal inspirations and expert advice to transition beautifully between the seasons.

We grew up in Northern California, where we had all four seasons. Leaves would change colors and fall off the branches this time of year. In Los Angeles (where we all live now), the seasons are more subtle. For us, fall has become more of a feeling or a mood. That’s why we think it’s important to make changes to your beauty look and routine to celebrate the transition. As kids, we were all familiar with the feeling of “back to school” and wanting to return to campus with a cool, new look. We said, why should this stop after elementary school? Trying something new can be liberating and make you feel younger. Something as simple as a darker, deeper shade of lipstick or going a shade richer with your hair or eyebrow color can instantly change your look.

For us, autumn is the time of year to tone down the highlights and cut off dead ends, clean out your makeup bag and exfoliate the dry skin left from days at the beach or pool. It’s also about winding down and enjoying things like hot yoga and healing Korean spas. We are excited to share all of this with you in our second VIOLET GREY column!

THE MATCHING LIPS & NAILS

"I’ve been waiting all summer to bust out the deep, dark jewel tone nail polish! I’m really into matching your lips and nails right now. It may seem a little old fashioned, but that’s why I like it. I’d wear this new Nars shade with Tom Ford’s Nail Polish in Viper.”

- JENN STREICHER

NARS AUDACIOUS LIPSTICK LIV

THE EASY-TO-APPLY SHADOW

“This creamy formula is the perfect pretext to powder shadow, creating a smooth canvas for color, but it is also gorgeous by itself. This taupe wash of shadow on its own looks effortless. Keep the color concentrated along the lash line, and blend up and out.”

CLIFF DWELLING

Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn, Big Sur, California

Reason to Love: Big Sur is a romantic getaway this time of year because of the way the fog rolls in across the majestic cliffs, and there’s a chill in the air. Deetjen’s, which was built in the 1930s, is this rustic and cozy inn nestled on the edge of the Redwood Forest. Plus, the food at the restaurant is award-winning, fresh and delicious.

Streicher Must: Be sure to book a massage and soak in the hot springs at Esalen. These cliffside hot springs have been used by the Esselen Indians for healing rituals for more than 6,000 years.

SPA SCRUBBING

Natura Spa, Los Angeles, California

Reason to Love: The hot and cold baths are great for thermal therapy, which strengthens the immune system and promotes blood circulation.

Streicher Must: Schedule a treatment that consists of a full-body exfoliation. A Korean scrub removes every bit of dead skin and is traditionally followed by a very slippery oil massage. There’s nothing better than an immediate moisture surge for that new layer of skin. It’s total skin renewal.

APPLE PICKING

Apple Hill, Placerville, Northern California

Reason to Love: Apple picking and wine tasting are great ways to revel in the season outdoors. For us, it’s not fall without a trip to Apple Hill, where you can pick your own apples. They also have a charming shop that sells caramel and candied apples, pumpkins and, of course, pie.

Streicher Must: There are some great wineries in the area. Boeger is our favorite. They make such delicious wines and have beautiful picnic grounds. It’s a must-visit.

TONE & TRIM

ASHLEY SAYS: I recommend getting a trim and warming up your color to refresh your lightened hair after a summer of sun exposure and swimming. An in-salon gloss or toner is an easy process with little to no peroxide, so it leaves your hair shiny and smooth. In Los Angeles I recommend Johnny Ramirez or Anja Burton at the Ramirez Tran Salon.

SWEAT

JENN SAYS: While I find hot yoga a little intense in the summer, it’s wonderful in the fall. It feels so good to sweat it out in a warm room and then be able to walk out to a cool afternoon. I love to go to Modo Yoga in L.A.

REFRESH

JENN SAYS: Don’t forget to clean out your makeup bag. Swap in a lighter shade of foundation. Replace lip glosses with creamy lip colors and rich balms. Don’t forget to wash your brushes thoroughly with a gentle shampoo and lay them flat to dry.

EXFOLIATE

KRISTIE SAYS: Dry skin brushing has many benefits, but it is especially good to increase circulation and shed dead skin cells, which assists the natural changes your body needs during the transition of the seasons. It also stimulates the lymphatic system, which helps to filter and eliminate toxins from the body. I recommend the Yerba Prima Tampico Skin Brush.
