16 Years of Coachella in Pictures: Bands, Braids, Bikinis, and Flower Crowns
The Coachella festival kicked off in 1999 with Beck, Morrissey, Rage Against the Machine, and Tool. It lasted just one weekend, and the heat was so unbearable that the organizers couldn’t get financing for the event in 2000. But in 2001 they were back with a Jane’s Addiction reunion to headline the event, as well as Paul Oakenfold and Fatboy Slim.
Over the years, the festival has grown from one weekend to two, and from indie artists to names like Madonna and Paul McCartney. In 2010, Jay Z headlined, and more than 200,000 people showed up to throw diamonds.
As the 2016 Coachella fest kicks off this weekend, with headliners Guns N’ Roses, Calvin Harris, and LCD Soundsystem – we’re taking a look back at some of the most amazing Coachella moments.
