Chrissy Teigen is Changing the Definition of a Mom Cut

Gone are the days that moms have lame hair. Chrissy Teigen just got the coolest cut ever following the birth of baby Luna, and moms have no reason to mourn their long tresses anymore. Sure, mom haircuts have a reputation of being historically uncool, but with all the stylish crops out there, why can’t a functional haircut also look great and have personality?

“The best way to update your haircut with confidence is to change the bulk in the hair,” advises Kérastase Paris Consulting Hairstylist Matt Fugate. “Freeing up the weight is my number one go-to for new moms.” Angles or layers could keep your hair from looking weighed down when you have less time for styling, and if you have thick or “big” hair, you may want to ask your stylist to use thinning shears when going shorter, to avoid the dreaded triangle shape.

“Bye bye, weave!” Chrissy Teigen said in her haircut snapchat.

Minimizing the bulk of the hair will also give busy moms another reason to ditch the hot tools. “It will allow them to embrace their natural wave and texture so they can air dry with confidence,” says Fugate. “As they start losing their hair, which is normal after a baby, the shorter thinned layers will blend with the new growing baby hair.”

If you want to recreate Teigen’s look, Fugate advises doing so with caution if you have naturally thick hair. “This is a very hard cut to style and grow out,” he says. “It’s a giant thick triangle in a week, if not hit with irons.” For those of us that don’t employ full-time stylists, a less blunt look should do the job. Or, if you’re blessed with tousled waves and piecey texture, chop away.
