How a Celebrity Makeup Artist Makes His Clients Look Younger

The key to anti-aging obviously starts with a good skin care regimen, but what if we told you it was possible to turn back the clock instantly simply by adding a bit of makeup? Well, according Kris Jenner's go-to celebrity makeup artist, Etienne Ortega, it’s easier to do than you’d think. Here, Ortega maps out how to take years off your face in just a few minutes.

Camouflage Wrinkles With Tinted Moisturizer and a Damp Sponge:

Makeup that settles into fine lines will instantly age you, so Ortega recommends starting with a smooth base before applying product. “Use a moisturizer with collagen to fill out fine lines and wrinkles and to prime your skin for makeup,” he explains.

Next, coat your face with a tinted moisturizer (not foundation!) and use concealer on the spots that need a little extra attention. A pigment-packed lotion like the Philosophy Renewed Hope in a Jar Skin Tint ($39) should do the trick for this step.

Lastly, use a damp sponge in a tapping motion when applying makeup to the skin. It'll help the product adhere to your face for a more natural finish. "The beauty department at T.J. Maxx and Marshalls has a great selection of quality sponges, cosmetics and skin care to help you nail this look—all at amazing prices,” he adds.

Hide Hyperpigmentation With Focused Concealing:

Another age-related skin issue? Sunspots. Hyperpigmentation typically needs thicker products to cover it successfully, so Etienne recommends applying a full-coverage liquid foundation and using concealer to zero in on any spots that are still showing through.

Finally, set your foundation with a light dusting of colorless setting powder to ensure it doesn’t budge throughout the day.

Brighten Dull Skin With a Hydrating Primer:

In order to bring drab skin back to life, make applying a hydrating primer like the Becca First Light Filter Face Primer ($38) your first step before using foundation. “Then, apply a foundation and swipe some bronzer on your cheeks, forehead, nose and chin, as these are the points the sun would naturally hit.” As your last step, add a touch of blush on the apples of your cheeks and a swipe of highlighter along the cheekbones, center of the forehead and tip of the nose.
