Stars: They break out just like us. And when they admit it, it’s just so refreshing. That’s why we’re loving Brie Larson for posting of a totally candid, unfiltered Instagram of herself on the red carpet with a big red arrow pointing out her prominent pimple in the most perfect way. The caption read, “When you’re stressing/obsessing over a zit so you put on too much zit cream before bed and wake up to giant dry spot but you gotta get your photo taken anyway.”

Larson’s relatability is one reason her fans adore her so much. “You are my hero,” Instagrammer @nicolette353 commented. “This is why I love you,” echoed @flowerluv.

Some fans offered the actress advice, like “try putting a little bit of oatmeal over it next time instead.” We asked the British Association of Dermatologists for their expert tips on how Larson (and we) can best avoid acne flare-ups and annoying scabs, scars, and flaky skin. “If your face goes red and is irritated by a lotion or cream, stop treatment for a few days and try using the treatment less often and then building up gradually.” In other words, don’t lay the benzoyl peroxide on thick like Larson. The association also recommends “noncomedogenic” makeup, gentle cleansing (no rubbing!) to remove makeup and dirt, a healthy diet, and no picking at zits, no matter how tempting.

The real-skin movement in the celeb Instagram game is strong. Actress Daisy Ridley often shares her derm dilemmas, posting pics of her skin care regimen. Recently she shared a down-to-earth shot of her face dotted with zit cream, with the caption, “ACTUALLY why not! #istillputafilteronit #spotcreamwin #hidingmostofmyface #igotthismugfromtheellenshowanditismassiveandamazing #kobekobekobe”

In 2014, Lorde’s post went viral when she tweeted a split image that compared one publication’s Photoshopped version of her face and another, unretouched shot of her less-than-perfect skin at the same performance. “I find this curious — two photos from today, one edited so my skin is perfect and one real. remember flaws are ok :-),” she wrote.

Other celebs who aren’t afraid to let their imperfect skin shine are the ever-relatable Mindy Kaling, who shared her spot-creamed face on Instagram with the caption, “That zit cream in your 30’s life.” Then there was Zooey Deschanel, who Instagrammed a selfie that showed off her dark undereye circles, and Bethenny Frankel, whose zit-highlighting pic proves you can get acne at any age.

In a society where pie-in-the-sky perfection is glorified, we’re grateful for every single clogged pore, blemish, and discoloration celebs decide to share with the world. Keep ’em coming, ladies.
