How Stella Bugbee of New York Magazine’s The Cut Stays Healthy and Beautiful

There really isn’t a better way to start Monday morning than with a good breakfast. That’s why we took some time to visit The Cut’s Editorial Director Stella Bugbee’s house to see how her and her kids start their morning (let the record show the only thing more appealing than breakfast at the Bugbees are the Bugbee kids themselves). We also couldn’t help but plug Stella for beauty routines, her definition of good content and why she’d say Beyonce quotes to herself in the morning…

From start to finish, what would be your ideal food day?

If I could eat whatever I wanted…

6am: A pot of green tea with almond milk and honey and a large glass of ice cold water with a whole lemon squeezed into it.

7am: A fancy fruit plate with fresh berries, scones with Devonshire cream and jam, and a second cup of tea.

2pm: A big Kale Salad with grated parmesan, grilled salmon, and fresh French bread with sweet butter.

4pm: Dark chocolate or some kind of fancy gummy candy from Sugarfina.

7pm: To start: A vodka martini and a dozen oysters all to my greedy self.

8pm: A big glass of red wine, a pasta with brown butter and something like spicy sausage and bitter greens.

9pm: A sweet Sauternes with crisp biscotti to dip in it and a slice of salted caramel tarte to share with my husband.

How do you always start your day on a good note?

My youngest child wakes me up in the morning every day at about 6am. He’s my human alarm clock. Even though I would like more sleep, he’s so sweet that I don’t mind. I really like the mornings with my kids. We eat, we talk, and sometimes we draw.

Words to yourself upon getting up, looking in the mirror in the morning and getting dressed…

Do people do that? Wow, I never thought of doing that. I should say some kind of Beyonce quote or something, but I don’t really have much time to think about myself in the mornings.

What are your morning and nightly beauty routines?

AM: Wash with warm water. Apply P50 on a cotton pad. Apply SKII Essence and Sunday Riley Juno Oil. Let rest. Curl lashes. If my skin is reddish from lack of sleep, I apply a bit of By Terry foundation with a damp beauty blender. Sometimes I add in a tiny bit of Indie Lee moisturizer to thin out the foundation even more. I hate a cake-y look. I apply Troy Surratt mascara, eyebrow pencil, and eyeliner. I dot a bit of La Prairie Crème Blush and when I’m feeling good, some Tom Ford Lipstick in Cherry Lush.

PM: I remove eye make up with whatever thing I am testing at the moment. I wash with Eve Lom night time cleanser, which is a long-ish process. (I do this in the shower). Then I do the whole SKIIJuno Oil thing again. This time I add an eye cream. Right now I am using Sisley eye cream, but I’ve tried about 300 different kinds and will probably try 300 more. I don’t know if makes such a difference which one you use, as long as you use one consistently. I never skip this routine, no matter how tired or how many glasses of wine I’ve had.

How do you practice beauty from the inside out? 

Vitamins. Twice a day: BiotinCod Liver OilFlax Oil, Calcium, and Vitamins C, K and D.

What is your personal definition of good content?

Something that doesn’t make you feel dumber for having read it.

Go-to quick recipe for weeknight dinners…

Roasted Chicken. It’s so easy to throw in the oven at a very high temperature with some veggies to roast too. In an hour you have a real meal. In the interim, I put out a hard cheese and crackers or apples.

In the same vein as ‘what is the new black’, what’s ‘the new potato’ right now?

Pizza.
