Beyoncé's Hairstylist Says it Only Takes Him 5 Minutes to Do Her Butt-Length Braid
ICYMI: Beyoncé is clearly taking her own advice and twirling (her braided ponytail) on them haters. Recently during her Dusseldorf concert last Tuesday, the singer debuted a new braided ponytail that was long AF - like Rapunzel long - and was flinging it all over the place, which had the internet freaking out.
Twitter users immediately started tweeting about the insanely long pony. "Beyonce's ponytail is weapon of mass destruction," wrote @FreddyAmazin, posting proof of Queen B serving dance moves like no other in her new style.
@NoelNiks tweeted, "Beyoncé is mos def feeling herself with that ponytail 😍"
@AyeQueLo said, "Beyoncé get that ponytail and be like 'Cause I slay, I slay, I slay, I slay'"
And @Dasnutellatoast tweeted, "#FormationWorldTour," giving us all further proof that Bey knows how to work a ponytail like no other.
I was instantly in awe of this style, which has been likened to "the spinning blades of a helicopter," and the way she whipped it around (I would have serious neck damage, no doubt, but she's Beyoncé, so I'm sure it's like NBD to her). Naturally, I had a zillion questions about it: What inspired it? How long did it take to do? Was it heavy? How far back did her backup dancers have to stand so they didn't get whipped in the face? Did she whip herself in the eye? IS SHE HUMAN? TELL US! So, I called Neal Farinah, resident hairstylist on the "Formation" world tour and the man responsible for this dangerously cool style, to give me the scoop.
Farinah told me that he had wanted to switch up her style and do something different. "Beyoncé was like, 'What would you want to do?' And I wanted to make a statement and really embrace and celebrate the braided hair trend, so I just kept adding pieces of braided hair into her braided ponytail, and the more I started braiding it, the longer it got and the cooler it looked. It only took me five to 10 minutes to do."
Not only that, it wasn't as heavy as you might think. "When you're a seasoned artist, you have to know what to put in clients' hair, especially when she's going to be whipping it around," he said. "You can't put something heavy on their head, so I chose the lightest braids to weave in to make it super long."
When I asked Farinah what he thought about the internet response to the hairstyle, he said, "I'm so excited that everyone was talking about it! And how she worked the braid on stage was incredible." Farinah also told me that Beyoncé loved it too - and clearly so, since she's been wearing an equally long ponytail since.
