Amy Schumer: “I Have a Belly & Cellulite & I Still Deserve Love.”

Leave it to Amy Schumer to give Glamour magazine one of the most funny, totally candid, and real interviews ever. While Schumer has been on the comedy circuit for over a decade, her deadpan, raunchy, NSFW humor is suddenly everywhere. She brought the house down as host of the MTV Music Awards this spring, her video clips from her show Inside Amy Schumer are going viral, she’s written and starring in her first movie, Trainwreck, and she’s Glamour’s August cover girl. It’s no wonder that Schumer is becoming a reigning comedy queen. She hysterically challenges beauty ideals, the female obsession with perfection, women’s roles in relationships, and Hollywood’s ridiculous standards. Through it all, she never holds back. In the Glamour interview, conducted by her sister, writer Kim Caramele, Schumer talks about everything from handling fans who feel like they know her to why she deserves sex and love, no matter what her weight.
A few months ago, Amy Schumer gave possibly one of the best award show speeches ever at the Glamour U.K. Women of the Year ceremony in London. “I’m not nervous right now. I don’t live here…I’m probably like 160 pounds right now, and I can catch a dick whenever I want,” was one of her opening lines. When asked about the hilarious comment, Schumer told Glamour, “For women, we’re taught to eat less until we disappear. And trained to believe that if you don’t look like everyone else, then you’re unlovable. And men are not trained that way. Men can look like whatever and still date a supermodel. I’m proud of what I said. I think it’s good to see somebody saying: I have a belly. And I have cellulite. And I still deserve love. And to catch the old D. And to not apologize.”

Schumer loves to talk about sex in her act and on her show (“If I take off my clothes with a guy, I’m like, ‘You’re welcome!’”). She tells Glamour that her attitude about sex is open, and like her comedy, all about equality. “Do what you feel you want to do while also considering how you’ll feel the next day…Don’t not have an orgasm. Make sure he knows that you’re entitled to an orgasm. I like to say it. I’ll be like, ‘Hey, there are two people here.’ I’ll be like, ‘Oh my God, have you met my clit?’ Don’t be self-conscious.”
Schumer believes that her candor about sex, along with her bursting fame, may have negatively impacted her love life however. “It’s hurt it. Now I have to wonder what people’s intentions are, and also people think that I have more sex than I do,” Schumer says. “But you know what? I made a decision. I’m gonna do this anyway. [Laughs.] I’m gonna keep speaking up and creating all this work. I could have roped it in and hopefully found a mate. But I made a decision. And it does feel like sometimes it’s a sacrifice for my love life and social life. Hero alert!”

Schumer’s admits that her candid brand of comedy has the effect of making everyone want to be her best friend, but that familiarity can be awkward in real life. Schumer pulls back the curtain revealing that she isn’t the person on stage that she is in real life. “I think most people think they already know me and that I’ll be fine with them coming up and being very familiar with me,” Schumer tells Glamour. “But really I’m an introvert and don’t feel comfortable around big groups and strangers. It’s overwhelming for somebody to come up and want to just be friends right away. People think comics are always funny and on. And we’re not. We’re pretty quiet.”
Schumer also discusses some of the tougher things she has gone through, including her father’s diagnosis with MS when she was nine. It is an experience that she believes has shaped her perspective on everything from her take on romance to her comedy. “Seeing a parent you thought was invincible completely decline makes you appreciate everything, and it also lets you know that life can be horrible for no reason, “Schumer says. “And I think knowing that has informed a lot about who I am.”
