Alicia Keys Has a ‘No Makeup’ Makeup Artist: Here’s the Secret Behind Her Flawless Skin

Alicia Keys started a full-on makeup-free revolution that has celebs like Kim Kardashian, Tamron Hall and Gabrielle Union jumping on board. On the Today Show, the singer called her choice to go bare-faced “really empowering” and has been stepping out everywhere without any makeup. From the VMAs red carpet to the Tom Ford fashion show and her nightly judging duties on The Voice, she’s proven she’s deeply committed to her natural look. But after all these appearances we’ve been left wondering how her skin looks so radiant and blemish-free. And we finally have our answer. Meet her “no-makeup” makeup artist, Dotti.
The makeup artist spilled all the details on Keys’ flawless complexion in a new interview with W and revealed that regular facials, acupuncture and a healthy lifestyle are the main factors that contribute to Keys’ glowing skin. But she has few funky tricks up her sleeve that includes cucumbers, oils and ice machines. (You read that right.)

Dotti says “ice work” brings blood to the surface which tightens skin and gives it “that pop that you need.” So how does ice work … work? “I stick a jade roller in ice, so it’s basically freezing when I roll it over her skin,” Dotti explains. “I really, really work into all those areas where I want blood and water and energy brought to the surface. It brings her skin to life, it practically makes her skin say, ‘Hi. I love you.'”
As for cucumbers? If she thinks her skin needs it, she’ll start by grating an entire cucumber. “Then place the pulp no higher than her brow bone and no lower than her under-eye bone, not going near sensitive parts of the eye. If we’ve got time, I’ll put the pulp all over her face until it draws the heat out of the skin and bring the blood to the top. That’s what most of the cooling agents do. Tomorrow is cucumber day.”
She calls oils a “staple” of her kit and explains that no one should be afraid of them. “People get freaked out about oils. They think if they’ve got oily skin they don’t want oil. But yes, you do!” Her must-have product for Keys is MV 9 Oil Cleansing Tonic.

Even though Keys’ practicing a makeup-free lifestyle, Dotti still applies a few things to liven up her face during performances or The Voice appearances.
