A Campaign to Raise Awareness for Cervical Cancer

It’s time to grab your lipstick and do some good. Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust, a UK-based charity helping women and families affected by cervical cancer, has launched a new social media campaign called #SmearforSmear. The campaign encourages women to apply their favorite lipstick, smear it, and take a selfie to remind women to make their annual pap smear appointments. Cervical cancer is the most common cancer in women under age 35 according to the charity, with 1 in 3 women skipping annual testing.

Georgia May Jagger and Rita Ora have already participated, and the hashtag is starting to take off with over 1,600 posts on Instagram. Some of our favorite images come from makeup artist Peter Philips (the man behind the dreamy beauty looks on the Dior runways) who supported the campaign by posting a series of beautiful photos from a 2009 editorial for 10 Magazine.

This isn’t the first time a non-profit has taken to social media to raise awareness. This summer saw the success of the the ALS Association’s Ice Bucket Challenge, with everyone from Taylor Swift to Bill Gates participating buy dumping a bucket of ice water on themselves to support funding for research of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
