Whether Inauguration Day 2017 makes you cry tears of joy or sorrow, a face full of sob-smeared makeup is not a good look. And while we can’t control your personal feelings about our president-elect, Yahoo Beauty does know a hack or two (or seven) to help you select mascara and foundation that won’t run:

Hack No. 1: Prioritize primer

As many makeup artists have advised for years, “It’s a crime not to prime!” So don’t skip this postmoisturizer step in order to prepare your skin for makeup application. It provides a smooth base, allowing foundation, concealer, and any other face enhancers to blend in properly. Try Laura Mercier Foundation Primer — Oil Free. It has a lightweight texture and helps to keep your makeup budge-proof throughout the day.

Hack No. 2: Pat & press

While your first instinct when you feel a cry coming on might be to grab a Kleenex, do try to avoid rubbing your face excessively. Instead, softly pat and press in those tears, which will keep you from smearing cosmetics all over your face.

Hack No. 3: Use Long-wearing foundation

When prepping for a long and active day, steer clear of tinted moisturizers and beauty balm creams. Instead, try a heavy-duty face enhancer such as Neutrogena Nourishing Long Wear Makeup. The formula has been tried, tested, and editor-approved to last through sweat or tears — and it’s rated SPF 20 to protect your skin from the sun.

Hack No. 4: Try the no-makeup trend

Yep, it’s is here to stay, folks. And on days when you are mentally preparing for an emotional overload, it’s wise to stay away from bold eye shadows and lipsticks. Keep it simple yet chic with glowing skin, nude makeup, and groomed brows. Add a few sweeps of highlighter for an extra hint of glam.

Hack No. 5: Master mattes

As much as we love to play with different textures, it’s important to find amazing mattes to incorporate into a makeup look to keep it all in place. There are matte eye shadows, lipsticks, and even concealers, so there’s no excuse to not try rocking these built-to-last picks. A great option: Lorac Pro Matte Eye Shadow Palette, with eight matte shades in everyday wearable colors, all absolutely gorgeous.

Hack No. 6: Fan out

You have spent precious time getting your look together. If all else fails, create a makeshift fan to keep you tears from flooding down your face: Grab a sheet a of paper, fold it in half, and fan away to assist in drying out those tears before they fall.

Hack No. 7: Wear waterproof mascara

This is a no-brainer, but just in case you need a refresher, an amazing wand to help those tears from crying a messy midnight river is Urban Decay Cannonball Ultra Waterproof Mascara. The Japanese formula works extra-hard to make sure you can weep without looking like there’s an oil spill on your face.
