5 Food Resolutions to Keep You Fit and Trim

By Amie Valpone

Now is a great time for a fresh start because the significance of starting a new year can inspire us to make significant changes of our own. But resolutions are often vague or a little overambitious. “I’m going to get to the gym every day” or “I’m going to eat healthier” sound like great ideas, but they can be hard to stick to once you’re back in your regular routine. For the best results, choose specific and actionable goals that you can track daily. Here are five food resolutions that will boost your health without overwhelming you!

1. Eat a serving of fruits or vegetables at lunch. For many people, an average lunch consists of a sandwich and chips. Whether you eat out or bring your lunch, choose salads, opt for the side of fruit, or replace chips with carrots to boost your produce intake.

2. Opt for whole grains when eating out. Many restaurants offer gluten-free whole-grain alternatives, such as brown rice or quinoa. When given the option, ditch the white foods (white potatoes, pasta, and rice) and go for the fiber-rich whole grains.

3. Eat vegetarian one meal each day. Eliminating meat just once a day can have a tremendous impact on your health and the environment. It will help you be more conscious of your food choices, inspire you to get creative with nuts, seeds, whole grains, and veggies, and can empower you to make an impact on the planet.

4. Try one new whole food a week. During your weekly food shopping trip, pick an item you’ve never tried before like quinoa, Swiss chard, or collard greens. It’s a great way to keep your diet interesting, and you never know how much you’ll like healthy eating until you try what’s out there.

5. Eat breakfast every single day. Eating breakfast is a huge part of managing your weight and making healthy choices all day long. Even if you don’t feel hungry in the morning, having gluten-free toast with nut butter, a piece of fruit with a handful of walnuts, or a bowl of cereal will fuel you up so you aren’t starving and racked with cravings by noon.
