This 3-year-old's birthday card to her cancer survivor dad is a gift to us all

Andrew Ross McMahon is a musician who lives in the Los Angeles area. The artist just recently turned 35 and received a remarkable birthday gift that he felt he needed to share with his many fans. McMahon is a rock musician who has made a name for himself in bands such as Something Corporate, Jack’s Mannequin, and his current project entitled Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness. It’s under the latter guise that McMahon recently shared a touching gift he received from his daughter for his 35th birthday.

Labeled with the straightforward title “Ten Things I Like About Dad,” it lists stuff daughter Cecilia cherishes about her dad — something any parent should be able to appreciate. Particularly when they are young, it’s not often children can articulate what they hold dear about their always-present caregivers, so we can see why this gift was a must-have for his social media channels.

Included on Cecilia’s list were items like “his hair,” “he protects me when I’m scared,” and “people helped him get better when he was sick.” The last one referring to McMahon’s public battle with leukemia. McMahon underwent treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2005 and was documented in a 2009 film called Dear Jack — both of which occurred well before Cecilia’s birth in 2014.

Another item on her list, No. 8, to be exact — “He helps other people not get sick” — refers to McMahon’s efforts to raise money for cancer awareness through his Dear Jack Foundation, which has raised over half a million dollars toward pediatric cancer research over the last eight years.

As a reminder to appreciating the special things about our loved ones, Cecilia’s birthday card to her daddy is exemplary. McMahon’s story as well is one that should help us all pause and appreciate life’s big struggles and little rewards.
