1984 anti-Sikh riots: Court gives life sentence to three accused

A Delhi court on Thursday gave life imprisonment to three convicts in 1984 anti-Sikh riots case in which Congress leader Sajjan Kumar was acquitted due to lack of evidence. Earlier, CBI had sought death sentence for three of the five convicts in the case as it told the court that they were engaged in "planned communal riot" and "religious cleansing". The court sentenced Balwan Khokkar, Girdhari Lal and Captain Bhagmal to life imprisonment after hearing arguments from the CBI and defence on the quantum of the sentence. Two others, ex-MLA Mahender Yadav and Kishan Khokkar, have been sentenced to three years imprisonment.
