Yahoo Autos Top 10 Most and Least Expensive States to Insure a Car

Insurance is one of those costs of car ownership you have to think about when figuring out how much car you can afford. For car shoppers in Michigan, the high cost of car insurance means they can afford far less car than those in the rest of the country, even in neighboring Ohio.
A new study from Quadrant Information Services and InsuranceQuotes.com ranks the most and least expensive states to insure a car in, and Michigan tops the list. That’s mostly because it is not only a no-fault auto-insurance state but also requires unlimited lifetime coverage on medial expenses. It’s the only state that has such a rule.
While Michigan residents pay 135.9 percent more than the national average on car insurance, folks in Rhode Island — the second-highest state — pay 45.3 percent more than the average.
