Subaru Challenges Roadkill Web Series to Shootout with Surprising Choice

When it comes to rally sport, the natural assumption is Subaru will compete with a WRX STI – a truly amazing four-door AWD sedan that just lives to be thrown hard into rally course corners. Yet, Subaru has responded to a challenge from Roadkill, the YouTube TV show, with a surprising choice.

Subaru is prepared to face off against a 1968 Ford Ranchero, a 1968 Dodge Charger, and a 1971 Datsun 240Z with a (drumroll please) 2015 Subaru Legacy. And, just to make things more interesting, it’s a double-overhead-cam FB series 2.5-liter Boxer engine. Subaru didn’t even bother bringing the six-cylinder Legacy out to play.

As the folks at Roadkill note, “Subaru is so confident in its Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive setup that it’s willing to go head-to-head against our cars that have twice the power, or more. Of course, the deck is stacked: the challenges are on slippery surfaces.” Roadkill describes itself as building “ratty project cars for stupid fun.”

Diane Anton, Subaru’s corporate communications manager, tells BoldRide the Legacy was the right choice for its Subaru symmetrical all-wheel drive with “secure traction in any environment”; vehicle dynamics control with active torque vectoring for sharp, stable handling performance; and a completely revised and retuned steering and suspension for better handling.

Three events will take place in the shootout, which airs on September 5th, on the Motor Trend’s YouTube channel.

1. The Barrel Race where the Legacy goes against the 1968 Ford Ranchero. The two will “be in a rodeo arena racing for time around a figure-eight race loaded with obstacles. Of course, the Subaru Legacy hopes to come out clean while Roadkill exists with egg on our face,” Roadkill says.
2. The Rallycross that pits the Legacy against a 1968 Dodge Charger using a 440 big-block out of a motorhome.
3. An Urban Apocalypse Street Chase that Roadkill describes as a “wheel-to-wheel chase through an old, abandoned zombie neighborhood with a mixture of surfaces and obstacles.”

It all sounds like a great time and we’re rooting for an upset win by Roadkill. After all, the site may have to shut down from shame if it loses to a four-cylinder Legacy.
