If you really push the Tesla Model S, you can manage a 0-60 mph time of just about 4 seconds flat. An impressive achievement for an electric car, wouldn’t you say? But just how fast can you take an electric car to 60 mph from a standstill? These speed-crazy college students found out.
The Dutch team out of Delft University of Technology snagged a world record 0-100 km/h (62mph) time for an electric vehicle of just 2.13 seconds, inching out the previous 2.68 second record. And while this makes it an impressive feat in itself for an electric car, this time also beat out the Ariel Atom V8′s 2.3-second run (aka, the world’s quickest production car).
At the heart of it all sat four electric motors, which produced a total output of 135 horsepower. That equated to about 33+ horsepower per engine. Power was sent to all four wheels, and even after all the equipment, the DUT12 weighed in at a feather-like 320 pounds.
What’s next? Well, after DUT12′s world-renowned success, the team handed over the reigns to the DUT13 and DUT14 teams whom hope to make a run at an even quick 0-100 km/h time. We wish them good luck.
