Volkswagen GTD Heading Stateside in 2015
The Volkswagen GTI has always been huge hit here in the US. A plucky little hatch with 200 horsepower, an affordable price tag and enough practicality for the average American. But now, imagine an even better GTI, one that still gives you all that hot-hatch performance, practicality and price, but also returns an impressive 56 mph. Where do we sign up?
Ladies and gentlemen, meet the Volkswagen GTD- a 2.0-liter turbodiesel-powered GTI- heading for US shores in 2015 with a price tag of $27,000. This marks the first time that V-dub has entrusted enough faith in the diesel hot-hatch to be a success outside of Europe.
Sitting down with VW Golf product manager Andreas Valbuena, Automotive News learned that the GTD will complete a “full range of offerings,” in the new Golf lineup. From this, they hope to 5 to 10 percent will be Golf Diesel sales.
With the aforementioned 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine, the GTD comes with both three- and five-door layouts, 181-hp and 56 mpg. The quirky little hatch can also sprint to 60 mph in jut about 7.5 seconds, continuing on to a top speed of 143 mph.
We can expect the GTD in 2015, as a 2016 model. The new gas-powered GTI will hit showrooms next year.
