Toyota GT 86 (Scion FR-S) Could Get a Power Increase for 2015
One of the main gripes we continually hear regarding the Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ/Toyota GT 86, is that the 2.0-liter, 197-hp boxer engine just isn’t powerful enough. Naturally, many who have been behind the wheel of this sportscar would understand, although where it may lack in power, it doesn’t lack in overall driver enjoyment.
In a recent interview with Drive, GT 86 chief engineer Tetsuya Tada, said that the sportscar could possibly get an upgrade in power for 2015:
“I hope to make an engine upgrade at least one time with this car,” said Tada, “We [have] already tried all possibilities and there are several types of 86 prototypes at the Toyota proving ground now; one is a turbocharger, one is a bigger displacement and [the other is a] special hybrid system. All possibilities are being considered.”
For enthusiasts, things brings in a lot of good news. With an increased engine displacement from 2.0- to 2.5-liters, total output would expected to head upwards from 197 to somewhere near 255. No word on how much boost a turbocharger would add to the mix just yet.
