The Odd and the Fantastical: Detroit 2014 Miscellany
Press days from the 2014 North American International Auto Show have wrapped up, and now the show will be turned over to the public. Many will go in looking for the hottest new cars and the biggest debuts, reported by BoldRide and others, but there was much more that was overlooked. Here are is our collation of the offbeat, odd, and under-reported from Detroit in 2014.
Let’s start with a car that everyone loves. The DeLorean was the brainchild of Detroit legend John DeLorean but found a place in our hearts as the time traveling coupe from the Back to the Future franchise. Above, it is being used to promote in-car technology or some such thing…
The Toyota FT-1 is one of the most impressive supercar concepts to come out of Detroit this year, but it got off to a rocky start. The box you see above was suspended 10 feet above the display until showtime, then it was lowered and these Stig impersonators disconnected it– or that was the plan. They could not get the box unhinged so there was a very awkward 30 seconds where only half the journalists could see the FT-1. Still, great car.
The Jeep Cherokee Trail Carver is one sweet ride…and in case you get lost in a very specific corner of the planet, there is even a topographical map on the hood!
