Here’s how to turn it on:

The Jaguar F-Type is Stunning, But Do All New Sports Cars Look the Same?

On the eve of the Los Angeles International Auto Show, Jaguar introduced its stunning new achievement, the new F-Type Coupe. In a rare reversal of debut best practices, Jaguar launched the convertible first, and has now gotten around to taking the curtains off the coupe version. The results are quite pleasing on the eyes.

It begs the question- is the F-Type the prettiest car on sale today? Since beauty is in the eye of the beholder, we’ll have to break it down and call into question some of the current design trends.

The Jaguar F-Type is Stunning, But Do All New Sports Cars Look the Same?

Lets start with the control in this experiment. The F-Type sports flowing fenders, an aggressive front grille and a long, sloping fastback profile. It I hard to argue with the styling merit of the F-Type, but there’s just one thing– we’ve seen these headlights before.

Sure, one might expect to see these lights on the convertible before it, but how about the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray and SRT Viper? Like every decade before this one, styling is very repetitive and designers like to borrow. A lot. For the sake of comparison, here is the F-Type headlight…

Now here is the Corvette headlight…

And the Viper’s…

And le headlights of LaFerrari…

So it’s a pretty face, but everyone seems to be doing the same thing. What makes the F-Type so stunning that that it has these wonderful curves but in a smaller package than the rest of these entrants. It’s smaller, but with the available 5.0-liter supercharged V8 making 550 horsepower, it has the same kind of power. That is pure bonkers.

The boy-racer vents of the Corvette knock it out of the running as the prettiest car from this model year. The Ferraris and Lamborghinis are too visually busy. The Viper is not meant to look pretty– it’s meant to look pissed.

Aston Martin Vanquish

So we would have to give the not to either the F-Type, or Aston Martin Vanquish Volante. But lets face it– all of these cars look sort of the same. So who would you crown as the best-looking car of 2014? Let us know in the comments below.
