New for 2014: Mercedes-Benz

2014 Mercedes-Benz Overview

In some respects, 2014 is a bit of an in-between year for Mercedes-Benz, as much of the company's lineup was reworked for the 2013 model year, and redesigned versions of the C-Class and CL-Class (likely to be replaced by a new S-Class coupe) are on deck for 2015. However, the 2014 lineup is certainly not without its noteworthy debuts and updates.

Chief among those would be the debut of a new S-Class sedan, available in rear-wheel-drive (RWD) S550 and all-wheel-drive (AWD) S63 AMG 4Matic trim levels with features including interior scented-air packages and seats that mimic a hot-stone massage. At the other end of the spectrum is the all-new CLA-Class 4-door coupe, a model loaded with standard creature comforts and performance courtesy of an optional 355-horsepower, turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that is priced below $30,000. These cars are complemented by the 2014 CLS-Class, which adds more power and a standard AWD system to the CLS63 AMG, and the E-Class sedan, now with a trim lineup that includes a 4-cylinder diesel engine option and an upgraded E63 AMG variant.

On the SUV and crossover front, Mercedes' G-Class, GL-Class, GLK-Class, and M-Class models carry over mostly unchanged. The same applies to the duo of SL-Class and SLK-Class hardtop convertibles. A track-ready Black Series model joins the SLS-Class family.

Fans of the Mercedes-Benz CL-Class would be well-advised to visit their dealer sooner than later, as the 2014 model year is slated to be the last for this large 2-door coupe. Expect an all-new S-Class coupe to serve as a replacement.

For its final run, the 2014 CL-Class offers a standard Premium 2 package with massaging seats, night-vision technology, and more. Trim levels include the CL550 4Matic, CL600, CL63 AMG, and CL65 AMG.

2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class

In an effort to attract a broader range of buyers, Mercedes has launched the all-new 2014 CLA-Class compact 4-door coupe. Slotted below the C-Class in the company's lineup, this small Benz is available with front-wheel-drive (FWD) or AWD capability and seating for 5 occupants. The base CLA250 trim level is equipped with 8 air bags, a forward-collision warning system, power front seats with 14-way adjustment, infotainment system linked to a 5.8-inch screen, and a turbocharged, 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 208 horsepower. A start/stop assist feature is also standard and contributes to EPA-estimated fuel economy measuring 26/38/30 mpg (city/highway/combined).

For enthusiasts, Mercedes-Benz will also be offering the AWD 2014 CLA45 AMG, fitted with a beefed-up version of the 2.0-liter engine that delivers 355 horsepower.

2014 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class

Credited as being the originator of the sleek, 4-door coupe body style, the CLS-Class returns for 2014 with a few upgrades to its most potent trim level. The CLS63 AMG now features standard AWD and a twin-turbocharged, 5.5-liter V-8 engine that delivers 550 horsepower (up from 518 horsepower in the 2013 model). In addition, the company has created a new CLS63 AMG S model fitted with a retuned version of that same V-8; output measures 577 horsepower and 590 lb.-ft. of torque. According to Mercedes, that extra dose of muscle under the hood contributes to a 0-60 mph time of only 3.6 seconds.

A relatively tame CL550 trim level is also part of the lineup. This variant features a twin-turbocharged, 4.6-liter V-8 engine that generates 402 horsepower and 443 lb.-ft. of torque, all of which works to push the car to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds.

The high-performance E63 AMG has also been tweaked for the 2014 model year and now features standard AWD capability, not to mention an extra 32 horsepower under the hood (for a total of 550). There's also a new E63 AMG S model that, thanks to some special engine tuning, produces 577 horsepower.

The ML250 Bluetec may join the lineup at a later date.

2014 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class

As was the case with multiple other Mercedes-Benz models, the SL-Class 2-door convertible was updated for the 2013 model year, so changes for 2014 are minimal. In fact, they're limited to the introduction of two new colors: Polar White and Cardinal Red Metallic.

Boasting a power-retractable hardtop roof and seating for two, the RWD 2014 SL-Class is available in SL550 and SL63 AMG trim levels, with the latter delivering 530 horsepower and 590 lb.-ft. of torque to propel it to 60 mph in only 4.2 seconds, according to Mercedes.

2014 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class

New paint colors are offred for Mercedes' 2-passenger convertibles. Like the SL-Class, the 2014 SLK-Class arrives with new Polar White and Cardinal Red Metallic paint color options, and nothing more to differentiate it from the 2013 model.

Under its power-retractable hardtop are accommodations for a driver and one passenger. Trim levels include the SLK250, equipped with a turbocharged, 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine; SLK350 powered by a 3.5-liter V-6; and the SLK55 AMG housing a 5.5-liter V-8.
