2014 Cadillac ELR Priced $40K More Than Chevy Volt
For those that covet the almighty MPG, the Chevrolet Volt was big news, but in practice, it is not a very exciting car. What the Volt needed to be exciting was svelte styling, a touch of luxury and a little bit more speed. What I’ve essentially just described is the 2014 Cadillac ELR; a better Volt, and now a much more expensive Volt.
Base MSRP for the 2014 Cadillac ELR has just been announced at $75,000. That price is more than previously expected. Even with the estimated $7,500 tax rebate, that is a starting price of $67,500– BEFORE the $995 destination charge.
That gets you two less doors (which actually improve the exterior appearance drastically) and some tweaking to the Volt powertrain to eek out a little more power. The formula consists of an electric motor and battery pack, receiving power from a gas generator. It offers up 35 miles of electric only driving before the 1.4-liter generator kicks in, at which point it delivers 82 MPGe.
The pricing puts it in the neighborhood of the Tesla Model S– a vehicle that General Motors has targeted the ELR at when it goes on sale in January of 2014.
