Yesterday, we learned that the last Lamborghini Gallardo rolled off the production line. The highly-specialized LP570-4 Spyder Performante was a fittingly wild conclusion to Lamborghini’s most successful vehicle run. But it got us thinking– the Spyder Performante, in addition to being fun to say, is also just one of many special edition Gallardos to roll out of Sant’Agata Bolognese. Here are all of them, from the oldest to the newest.
The first of the special edition Gallardos, was the SE. The “Special Edition” designation carried a lot of weight from the Diablo days, the SE Gallardo featuyred a two-tone exterior, with a black roof. Mechanically, it featured a “Thrust” mode, which would cap revs at 5,000 rpm and drop the clutch for a controlled burnout. Only 250 were made.
An homage to the Superleggera lightweight body work of the 350GT model of Lamborghini’s early years, this special edition was 220 pounds lighter than the standard model. 172 were built of the first generation Superleggera in 2008.
This special edition was named for, and built for the specification to, long-time Lamborghini test driver Valentino Balboni. He asked that this model be rear wheel drive, as opposed to the many four-wheel drive versions of the Gallardo. Just 250 of these were made.
The Super Trofeo is a Gallardo-only race series, featuring up-and-coming racers as well as super wealthy enthusiasts as its participants. The cars are modified for the track, and compete in six races a year. It is suspected that this race series is a developmental stage for Lamborghini’s future participation in some form of FIA-class racing. Only 30 models of the Super Trofeo were built in its initial run. A second run began in 2013.
Lamborghini began to expand the use of carbon fiber in this special roadster. The Spyder Perfomante is the lightweight version of the droptop Spyder. Like many of the others on this list, output is ay 570 horsepower, but for this model, 143 pounds were shed. This variant was the last Gallardo to roll off the assembly line.
This racing-spec Gallardo was prepared for the ADAC GT Masters racing series and Blancpain Endurance race series in 2011. It was built by the Lamborghini Motorsports Department and Reiter Engineering, and driven to the ADAC GT Masters amateur class by Peter Cox and Blancpain president and CEO, Mark A. Hayek. This 605-horsepower ride was auctioned off to raise money for the Monaco Association against Muscular Dystrophy.
Its 66 pounds lighter than the very similar Superleggera, and the rear spoiler is manually adjustable, offering as much as three times the downforce of a standard Gallardo. Like some other low-riding Lambos, it features a front axle lift system that temporarily increases the nose to get over speed bumps. Only 150 of these were built.
570 horsepower and all-wheel drive are a great start. Add to that a large fixed rear wing for added downforce and the stopping power of carbon ceramic disc brakes, and you have one serious performance machine.
With the 2013 design update, so too came a new Super Trofeo. It was run in the 2013 edition of the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo race series. This series was run before several larger racing events in summer of 2013. I watched them run around Lime Rock Park right before the last-ever American Le Mans Series race at that venue. The sound was spectacular.
This was the last new Gallardo special edition to be unveiled, and it might be my favorite! It is essentially a street going version of the Super Trofeo, and features the Italian tricolor as a stripe along the side– definitely one of the coolest paint schemes of any Lamborghini. Only 50 were produced– with only 15 going to the US and three for Canada.
BONUS: Gallardo Police Cars
Back in 2004, Lamborghini and a second private organization donated a pair of Gallardos to the Italian traffic police, known as Polizia Stradale. They are used as emergency response vehicles along the Salerno-Reggio Calabria, a highway in the south of Italy. The vehicles are also used for rapid delivery of transplant organs. They were replaced with a new pair of Gallardo squad cars in 2009.
