Bugatti Vision Gran Turismo Makes Jump From Playstation To Reality

When you’re in charge of design for an automaker that only builds 450 vehicles over several years, you have a lot of time to think about other ideas. Maybe that explains why the latest car in the Sony’s Vision Gran Turismo series — the Bugatti VGT — comes off as only slightly less wild than a production car, and why Bugatti will build one in the metal for the upcoming Frankfurt auto show.

Although it will only race on Playstations, Bugatti executives said they stuck to reality with their Vision Gran Turismo car, with a shape that was meant to reflect Bugatti’s racing heritage and aerodynamic pieces that would work as intended if ever exposed to physical air. Even the two-tone paint scheme has a historical link; it mimics the livery of the Bugatti “Tank,” the car that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1937.

Bugatti does not posit any imaginary power source for the Vision Grand Turismo, and with a 16-cylinder quad-turbocharged motor in its street vehicles, why would it need to?

While it’s meant to represent what an all-out modern Bugatti race car would look like, there’s enough evolution here from the Bugatti Veyron to wonder how much of this design might represent a sneak peek at the Veyron’s upcoming replacement, expected to cost $2.7 million when it goes on sale in a few years. We’ll get up close in Frankfurt to find out.
