Mini backflip a snowy daredevil firstAfter a century of hurtling fast cars over cliffs and off ramps, it's difficult to find something that hasn't been done, but could be with the right combination of machine and driver. This weekend, Mini managed to pull off just such a stunt thanks to a modified Mini Countryman John Cooper Works and rally racer Guerlain Chicherit — the world's first car backflip from a sitting ramp.

Other drivers have made successful backflips in vehicles before, and even more have screwed up attempting them. But previous attempts used some kind of movable ramp to ensure the car had the right motion before it went airborne. For Chicherit's attempt, the ramp was fixed in place, meaning all he had to do was hit it with the precise amount of speed and hope the Mini's heavily altered suspension could survive the landing. (Using a snow bank in Tignes, France, as a landing ramp also helps.)
