Miller Golden Submarine: Flickr photo of the day

The 1916 Miller Golden Submarine was only sporadically the fastest car of its era — and with 130 hp from its four-cylinder engine, it could easily top 100 mph. But more importantly, it was the first race car built with the safety of the driver in mind, at the behest of Barney Oldfield, who had seen his friend Bob Burman die in a wreck after his open car rolled. Now in the Petersen Museum, this shot by dmentd demonstrates how the Golden Submarine presaged hot rods and race cars for decades to come.
