The Argentinian had a long record of racing victories in South America, but World War II delayed his debut in Europe until he was 37 years old. On this day in 1950, Fangio won the Monaco Grand Prix from the pole, lapping the field in his Alfa Romeo. It would be the first of 24 F1 races he would win in his career, placing him among the all-time greats.
