Justin Bieber gets a Fisker Karma for his 18th birthday

Popular Canadian singer and hair product enthusiast Justin Bieber turns 18 years old today, and went on The Ellen DeGeneres Show yesterday, a traditional Hollywood rite of passage into adulthood. Waiting in the wings was a surprise gift from his manager -- a new Fisker Karma sedan. What young adult wouldn't want a car that sounds like the starship Enterprise?

In the clip below, manager Scooter Braun comes onstage and tells Canuck Elvis that he "broke my own rule" about humility: "We wanted to make sure, since you love cars, that when you're on the road you are always environmentally friendly. And we decided to get you a car that would make you stand out."

Bieber already has a fairly sizable garage of stand-out vehicles, including a murdered-out Cadillac CTS-V coupe he calls the "Batmobile," but seems genuinely chuffed about the $102,000 Karma. He joins a long list of Hollywood types who've been steered into Karmas, such as Leonardo DiCaprio, former vice president Al Gore, and the hygiene-compromised billionaire Ashton Kutcher plays on "Two And A Half Men."

Here's where I'd tell you how getting Bieber into a Karma will only help establish Fisker's cred as a real luxury carmaker. But I can't, because no one really knows whether Fisker will survive; founder Henrik Fisker stepped down as CEO this week, it's been blocked from getting additional loans from the U.S. government, which paid for part of the Karma's engineering, and it's halted work on a new model while looking for additional money. Like all Karma owners, Bieber's either driving the future of transportation or a future relic.
