Chevy kills Malibu hybrid after its MPG numbers don’t add up

As the new Honda Accord Hybrid and it's 50-mpg highway fuel economy rating demonstrate, automakers have put some muscle into making high-efficiency versions of midsize sedans. In addition to the 117,000 Toyota Priuses bought so far this year, Americans have driven home roughly 90,000 midsize hybrid sedans this year, from the Ford Fusion to the Kia Optima.

But this week, Chevy quietly revealed it was killing the hybrid edition of the Chevy Malibu, a model just two years old. The reason? The numbers — in sales, prices and fuel efficiency — simply didn't add up.
