BMW held a presentation today all about its future, and as part of that, it revealed its next all-electric car, the i4 sedan. First previewed by the Concept i4 last March, the production i4 will offer up to 530 horsepower and a range of 300 miles. It appears to be quite similarly related to the current 4-Series—especially the upcoming four-door Gran Coupe—and it should enter production in the coming months.

The i4 represents the first time BMW is entering the sport-sedan segment it helped define with an EV. It also reflects a change in approach for how the brand approaches electric cars. The i sub-brand launched with the quite unconventional i3 city car and i8 sports car, neither of which were based on any other existing BMW product. Now, BMW's i cars have much in common with their non-electric counterparts. The iX3 is an electrified version of the current X3 crossover, while the larger iX rides on a new architecture adapted from the CLAR platform that underpins virtually everything BMW makes. It appears that the i4 is essentially an electrified 4-Series.

BMW also announced today that in 2025, it will launch an all-new EV platform dubbed the Neue Klasse, the name referencing the company's iconic New Class sedans like the 2002. "The BMW Group is never satisfied with what it has achieved so far—that's what sets it apart from the rest of the field. This spirit will characterize the Neue Klasse: high tech on four wheels for customers intent on experiencing in just five years time how mobility will feel in 2030," said BMW chairman Oliver Zipse in a statement.

Details are a little light on the i4, beyond the 530-hp figure for the top-level M Performance variant of the sedan, and the estimated range figure. BMW says the i4 M Performance will hit 62 mph in around 4 seconds, so it's about on par with the new M3 and M4.

More details on the i4 will be released in the coming months, as production nears.
