2016 Mercedes-Benz GLS: First Look

Think of the new 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLS not as a Range Rover competitor—it boasts an extra row of seats—but as more of a Cadillac Escalade rival. It’s as luxurious as a Range, and ventures into the same triple digit price tag with just a few clicks on the option sheet, but it remains positively massive like the Escalade and will haul a large family with ease.

The GLS is basically a renamed version of the GL. It arrives in four variants—the diesel-powered 255-hp GLS350d, the 329-hp GLS400, the 449-hp GLS500 and the 577-hp GLS63 AMG; the latter producing 27 additional ponies over the outgoing AMG model, deriving from its punishing 5.5-liter twin turbo V-8.
