20 Best Deals On The Biggest New-Car Losers For 2015

September traditionally marks the beginning of a new model year, and unless you’re Volkswagen most automakers have reason to celebrate. This month’s sales are expected to come in at 1.39 million units, which would be the highest September volume recorded since 2006.

But while many models sales are soaring, others are plummeting, even crashing, with the worst of the lot finding over 40 percent fewer takers so far during 2015.

That’s good news favorable for seasoned car buyers looking to score a deep discount on remaining 2015 inventory.

We scoured the most recent new-vehicle sales reports from major automakers to isolate which 20 models are this year’s biggest losers, noting any manufacturers’ cash rebates or other incentives that may apply. These are vehicles suffering the biggest drop in sales over the first eight months of the year, compared to the same period in 2014. We gave a pass to low-volume models like exotic sports cars, where a few units can make a big swing percentage-wise. We also overlooked models that were either recently introduced, discontinued or redesigned during the calendar year, along with those that were essentially given the 2015 model year off to sell down unsold 2014 inventories, like the Cadillac ELR and Mitsubishi MiEV electric cars.

Some of the worst laggards might have additional “secret” dealer spiffs to help sweeten the deals, and astute hagglers could possibly knock an additional two or three percent off either the list or invoice price.

Time is money to an auto dealer, and the longer a new car sits in inventory the more it will pay in interest simply to watch it collect dust–thus incentivizing a dealer to take less cash up front to move an overstocked model.

Unfortunately, shoppers may not have a particularly rich inventory to choose from; those that linger in inventory may be limited to those coming in the least-desirable colors, equipped with odd option combinations or overloaded with every available feature.
