The other night, my Facebook feed was positively clogged with references to the Detroit Tigers' closer Jose Valverde. For those of you who don't follow baseball, a closer is a relief pitcher who is sent in late in the game to protect a lead. His job is to save the game. Valverde came in and, to sum up those status updates, kind of blew it. The game was almost lost on a couple of bad pitches. Detroit ultimately rallied, though Valverde was not credited with the save.
