  • Kate Middleton Makes a Case for the Figure-Flattering White Dress

Edward Barsamian Summer has finally arrived, and that means we're all in the mood for something lighter. As an alternative to spring's floral-print trend, the LWD is a great palate cleanser, even if the idea of wearing all-white can be daunting after a winter of bundling up. Kate Middleton showed that the look can be flattering at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich yesterday with a Jaeger dress that had clever slimming black accents. Simple and elegant, the Duchess's sheath is a study in sophisticated summer dressing, and her contrasting clutch and stilettos add a nice day-for-night touch. Thankfully there are plenty of ways to get the look that won't break the bank, and here we round up our five favorite affordable little white dresses. • Angelina Jolie and the Evolution of the Leg-baring Red Carpet Dress

Edward Barsamian With a mantelpiece heavy with awards (a SAG, a Golden Globe and an Oscar for her compelling performance in Girl Interrupted) and a home filled with six adorable children, Angelina Jolie has a lot to celebrate today, her 39th birthday. As far as party dressing goes, the actress has marked some of the most important occasions in her career with a thigh-baring slit. The Atelier Versace dress she wore to the 2012 Oscars might have caused a buzz, but it certainly wasn't the first time she stepped out in the look. She channeled a modern-day Rita Hayworth in another Atelier Versace dress just one month earlier, and put her best foot (and leg) forward in a voluminous frock from the Italian house to support beau Brad Pitt at Cannes in 2011. At the Kung Fu Panda 2 premiere, Jolie proved that the look translates into separates with a Michael Kors all-black top and skirt. And although she's recently taken to wearing slick suiting from Saint Laurent, Jolie stayed a step ahead of the trend in a dress by the French house at the Independent Spirit Awards. • 5 Things You Didn't Know About Jackie Kennedy Onassis

Eugenia Miranda On this day 20 years ago, former First Lady and eternal style icon Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis passed away in New York City. A special expanded edition of her 2004 biography, What Jackie Taught Us, was released earlier this month in commemoration of this anniversary. Written by Tina Santi Flaherty, who got to know the First Lady when they worked together on a campaign to save Grand Central Terminal from demolition-and as neighbors in the same apartment building-the book sheds light on little known details like how she once even worked at Vogue. Today, in honor of one of America's most glamorous and admired First Ladies, we share five surprising facts from Flaherty's insider perspective. • The Ultimate Dry Shampoo Guide

Mackenzie Wagoner In the grand scheme of hair metaphors, finding a good dry shampoo is like having a friend who will always plead the fifth in your honor, cheer you up when you're down, and make you look cooler by association. It's the Huck Finn to your Tom Sawyer, the Thelma to your Louise-only your family will be more approving of this relationship because, as any hairdresser will tell you, putting at least 48 hours between washes is a healthy decision. As straightforward as the blowout-extending concept seems, there's nuance to a good dry shampoo. Depending on your hair color and desired texture, the right one could deliver the perfect matte finish to your platinum blonde, or the right amount of grip to a deconstructed braid. To that end, we asked the industry's best dry shampoo-wielding stylists to break down the what, where, and why behind their favorite formulas. • The Best Beauty Looks from the 2014 Met Gala

Catherine Piercy If there was one moment that captured the spirit of tonight's best beauty looks, perhaps it was the sight of Suki Waterhouse as she swept down the red carpet of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in a frothy, tiered Burberry evening dress. In honor of the occasion, the model had traded the rumpled waves and clean skin that characterize her oft-photographed street style for powerfully pretty, bold crimson lips and an elegant flyaway chignon. Waterhouse wasn't the only one who seemed to be taking her beauty cues from a certain idea of mid-century glamour-and, perhaps, channeling the signature look of designer Charles James's most illustrious clientele along the way. From smooth, pressed waves worthy of Millicent Rogers to the bright crimson lips of Babe Paley, Old World opulence suddenly felt fresh. There were, of course, a few notable departures, turning up in the form of a jeweled emerald headpiece (Lupita Nyong'o) and a pompadour braid (Janelle Monáe). Somehow, we think that James, ever the contrarian, would have wholeheartedly approved. • Met Gala 2014: Who is Charles James?

Charles James's alias was "James Shape." What better moniker could there be for a designer known as an architect of fashion and who sculpted dresses that remain as breathtaking today as they were when they were first shown?

  • Mad About Fashion: The Friends and Foes of Charles James

Laird Borrelli-Persson Universally praised for his talent, Charles James was also famously high-strung. "Fashion's last angry man," is how one reporter described the highly articulate designer, who could be wickedly funny (he called Woolworth's "Barbara Hutton's boutique"), or just plain vicious. If James lived in the digital age, one can imagine that he'd be an avid commenter, and an active ignorer of the "like" button. James's biggest beef was with the system. Seventh Avenue was largely an anathema to James, a couturier, who believed in the trickle-down theory of fashion, a notion that the sixties Youthquake and the emergence of designer ready-to-wear lines (like Yves Saint Laurent's Rive Gauche), put to rest. While James's elitist view of fashion now seems out of step, his belief in the value of a designer's name, and his campaign for the need for support and recognition of and for American designers was prescient. When not tangling with Seventh Avenue or the IRS (James was anything but a successful businessman), the designer sometimes gave vent to more personal grievances. As the fashion world gears up for the Met's upcoming "Charles James: Beyond Fashion" exhibit, we take a look of some of the larger-than-life characters who came in and out of James's orbit and discover who did, and did not, make his final cut. • Victoria Beckham's 40th Birthday and Her 9 Poshest Looks

Edward Barsamian It's hard to write about the women you love, but today, the 40th birthday of noted designer and former pop star and music sensation Victoria Beckham, is certainly an occasion worth noting. As she prepares to celebrate in low-key fashion with friends and family tonight in Los Angeles, we look back at Mrs. Beckham's poshest wardrobe picks over the years, tracing her evolution from slinky and sexy dresses to the subdued sheaths that have become a chic signature for her eponymous line. Her crowning moment came at her wedding to soccer star David Beckham in a custom Vera Wang replete with tiara. But the singer toned things down in favor of au courant ensembles including a bi-color slip dress at the VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards, while at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute's gala for "Goddess," she donned a neo-Grecian frock from Dolce & Gabbana with free-flowing hair. Playing with hair color, Beckham went bold and blonde at the civil partnership ceremony for friends Sir Elton John and David Furnish, and accented her fur coat with an dazzling display of diamonds. Shortly thereafter, she debuted a new shorter cut at the wedding of Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise, showing off her physique in a strapless Giambattista Valli dress and Philip Treacy hat. And in 2006 Beckham captivated the red carpet at the Met Gala in a strapless Roland Mouret dress that complemented her ruby and diamond necklace. At the Met Gala in 2008-the same year she showed her first Victoria Beckham collection-the designer and husband David were the golden couple in custom ensembles from Giorgio Armani. Though perhaps it was at 2009's "The Model as Muse" Met Gala when Beckham, balanced whimsy and elegance in Marc Jacobs, fully solidifying her standing a fashion force to be reckoned with. While recent years have seen Victoria Beckham opt for tame tones, we love how she makes something as simple as a navy dress seem sensual yet appropriate. In heels, of course. • 15 Musicians You Should Be Following on Instagram

Rebecca Bengal and Diego Hadis Instagram not only allows us to share our lives with others, it's also a thrilling way for us to see the world the way celebrities do. And it's not just celebrities, either: It turns out that our favorite musicians are on the 'gram as well. Sure, a lot of accounts might seem as if they're run by record-label public relations departments, but some recording artists give us a fresh, unfiltered view (well, unless you're talking Lo-Fi or Hefe) of what they're up to, whether that means keeping themselves entertained on the long tour-bus slog between cities or getting primped and ready to hit the stage before the concert tonight. We already love their music, but following them offers up-close peeks into their lives, like Lorde's new Céline flats or A$AP Rocky's "tree$." And while you may know some of the bigger names on the social media platform-such as Beyoncé, who chose Instagram to unveil her last album, or Rihanna, for whom just one angle of herself is never enough-here, on the eve of Coachella, are other accounts that we think are the brightest and best out there. From shots of dinner parties to selfies to vacation sunsets, it's surprising how much you can learn from following someone-and it's even better when that person is famous. Most celebrity accounts feature impersonal red-carpet photos, self-promotional streams, or are simply private, but there are some that appear to genuinely use the social media app as a way of recording and sharing their daily lives. Just like us. Take Drew Barrymore, who recently posted pictures of a girls' cooking trip to Napa. Or Ryan Phillippe, whose feed includes intimate moments with his children. Chloë Moretz posts videos of herself out dancing with friends, while Amanda Seyfried has endless snaps of her dog Finn.
