  • Singapore property firm and agent fined S$16,000 for misrepresenting NZ deal

    A Singapore property agency has been fined S$10,000 after one of its agents misrepresented about a deal in New Zealand, causing a client to lose tens of thousands of dollars. The errant agent from SQFT Global Properties Singapore (SQFT), Paleenia Wong Mui Wah, was also fined S$6,000 for her wrongful handling of the sale of a unit of Albany Heights Villas in Auckland, New Zealand in 2011. The Council for Estate Agencies (CEA), which imposed the fines, said in a statement on Monday (5 December) that Wong told her client to pay the NZ$65,000 (S$65,790), which she said would be kept safe in a trust account for the construction of the property.

  • Sheng Siong kidnapper gets life imprisonment, caning

    The man who kidnapped the mother of the Sheng Siong supermarket chain’s founder was found guilty by Singapore’s High Court on 1 December 2016. Lee Sze Yong, 44, was sentenced to life imprisonment and three strokes of the cane. In a letter obtained by The Straits Times, Lee had asked for the death penalty even though the prosecutors and Lee’s lawyer had agreed on the life sentence and caning. Lee said he had “ruined his life”.

    Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi said Wednesday (30 November) that she is cautiously optimistic about the country’s future as she outlined political and other obstacles hindering its progress at a conference in Singapore. Speaking at an event organised by IE Singapore, Suu Kyi said the lack of political unity, high unemployment and over-dependency on natural resources to drive growth are among the biggest challenges facing Myanmar.

    Singapore entertainment provider Toggle has apologised for an episode of a comedy show  it aired, admitting that it was seen as “being racially insensitive by some users”. In Episode 6 of the show “I Want To Be A Star”, local actor Shane Pow’s character is seen with an afro wig and his face painted black in an attempt to portray a black man.
