  • The Fast Food Chains Americans Love And Hate The Most

Perhaps the key narrative in the world of fast food today is the rise of Chick fil-A and Chipotle and the fall of McDonald's. Industry analysts could build an entire career on an explanation of this phenomenon, but it's really not so complicated: American consumers love Chick fil-A and Chipotle, and they hate McDonald's. Every year, the ACSI folks poll 70,000 people to learn their opinions on various consumer products, then compile these opinions into a composite index that ranges from a low of zero to a high score of 100. McDonald's scored just 67 points in this year's report, far below any other chain in the survey and a whopping 6 percent lower than the Golden Arches scored last year.

  • 17 Foods Not Worth Making At Home

In some parts of America, this wasn't so long ago -- if you lived in the Texas Hill Country in the 1920s, for example, you probably baked all your own bread and cooked all your own food. Which is super rad! Cooking can be one of the great pleasures of life.

  • Whole Foods Execs Admit To Overcharging Customers

Consumer trust in Whole Foods Market was shattered last week when a New York City government investigation revealed that the supermarket had been systematically overcharging customers for packaged foods since at least 2010. At first, Whole Foods representatives stridently denied the claims -- but today, company executives admitted that the supermarket chain was, in fact, guilty of overcharging.

  • McDonald's Is Beefing Up Quarter Pounders

When does the beef in a Quarter Pounder weigh more than a quarter pound? According to CNBC, a quarter-pounder is currently made with a raw ground beef patty that weighs 4 ounces -- precisely a quarter pound. It should be said that the cooking process reduces that weight to less than a quarter pound in both cases -- to less, indeed, than a fifth of a pound.

  • Holographic Ads Are Now In Supermarkets, And They're Freaky

This week, Mondelez -- the former snacks division of Kraft that manufactures brands such as Chips Ahoy, Trident and Cadbury -- unveiled the first-ever holographic display ads in a grocery store. The new holographic displays are the centerpiece of an ad campaign centered around soccer, with the name "Pass the Love." They feature a spinning soccer ball with the logos of Chips Ahoy, Ritz and Honey Maid, "the official snacks of U.S. soccer," and a brief video snippet of American soccer star Alex Morgan. In real life, this little video is beamed from a holographic projector sitting on a shelf of Mondelez products onto a translucent screen, so that it looks like the soccer ball is floating and spinning in mid-air, at least when you look at it straight on.

  • Whole Foods Busted For Overcharging

Consumers have long referred to Whole Foods as "Whole Paycheck" for its high prices, but it isn't just sticker shock: Many locations of the Austin-based grocery chain are illegally overcharging customers. New York Daily News reporters broke the story, finding that Whole Foods locations in New York City have been systematically overcharging customers for a host of foods since at least 2010. According to documents obtained by the paper, New York City officials have cited the chain 800 times for charging customers more than they should pay, and have levied over $58,000 in fines for those offenses in the past five years.

  • 'Lust Vodka' Purports To Boost Libido In Female Drinkers

One of the key selling points for vodka is that it's less likely to give you a hangover than brown liquors such as aged whiskey and rum, likely because vodka has lower levels of chemicals called "congeners" that contribute to headaches and nausea the next day. Instead, the purported libido-boosting effects of Lust Vodka derive from alcohol -- which, of course, is found in all distilled spirits -- and "the power of suggestion." The manufacturer of the vodka, a sexily-named group called Alko-Plus, says that just reading the word "Lust" on the bottle is enough to get women in the mood. • Most Restaurants 'Saved' By 'Kitchen Nightmares' Are Now Closed

Most episodes of reality shows about rescuing troubled businesses -- "Kitchen Nightmares," "Bar Rescue," "Tabatha Takes Over" -- follow a story arc as reassuringly predictable as those in "Law & Order." In the first act, the ornery expert comes into the business and finds a plethora of problems. The blog's careful research reveals that a whopping 61 percent of all the restaurants that have ever been "saved" by Gordon Ramsay are now closed. Of those six survivors, just three are still owned by the same people who owned them when Ramsay stormed through their kitchens.

  • Why Many Restaurants' Best Food Isn't Available To Customers

Since it opened in the Arts District in the fall of 2012, Bestia has been one of the toughest reservations in Los Angeles. Every night, the Italian restaurant is packed with Angelenos and tourists grateful for the chance to eat the restaurant's homemade pastas, pizzas and charcuterie, widely considered some of the finest in the country. At 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. every day, Bestia serves its staff a sumptuous "family meal" prepared by one of its chefs.

  • Why Americans Are Spending More Money On Less Coffee

Few products illustrate the high price of convenience like K-Cups. There's no easier or faster way to get a hot cup of coffee than popping one into a Keurig machine, pressing a button and having a few ounces drip out into a mug.

  • This Video Explains How So Much Food Gets Wasted In America

Food waste advocates also argue that the world's farms already produce enough food to end hunger for good, if only the food that's currently thrown out could make it to the dinner plates of those in need. The most obvious source of food waste is in the home. Aubrey visited farms and packing plants in California's Salinas Valley, which produces a majority of the nation's leafy vegetables, to try to figure out how much of the produce that's grown there ends up being wasted.

  • 'Americans Are Just Simply Not Dieting Anymore'

Not according to Jeff Hamilton, the president of prepared foods at Nestle USA, who has seen sales of Lean Cuisine meals plunge 20 percent in the last two years alone. In a fascinating interview with FoodDive's David Oliver, Hamilton argued that Americans have lost their interest in cutting back on their caloric intake. As evidence of this idea, Oliver pointed to NPD Group surveys showing that the share of Americans who say they are dieting has plummeted to 20 percent after hitting a high of 33 percent in 1991.

  • Here's How Much Mouse Poop The FDA Allows In Your Food

The Food and Drug Administration, you see, has detailed guidelines on how much filth can be found in many of the foods sold in America. The FDA enumerates these guidelines in a document known as the "Defect Levels Handbook." The introduction to the handbook explains that "it is economically impractical to grow, harvest, or process raw products that are totally free of non-hazardous, naturally occurring, unavoidable defects" -- and that these so-called "defects" present no real risk to human health. The FDA also says that many food companies take measures to ensure that their food actually contains far lower levels of these defects than their regulations require.

  • Chick Fil-A's Menu Is Going Hipster

The chain's president Dan Cathy set off a media firestorm in 2012, when he admitted that he was opposed to gay rights. Cathy has since backtracked a little -- but even setting aside that issue, Chick Fil-A remains committed to a Christian ethos.

  • Here's Why Lobster Prices Are Surging Right Now

Remember those halcyon days when lobster was so cheap that you could afford to put it on mac n' cheese, french fries, tacos and grilled cheeses? Over the past year-and-change, lobster prices have risen sharply since record catches in Maine pushed them to historic lows in 2012 and 2013. In April, the Maine Department of Marine Resources reported that lobster prices rose 79 cents per pound between 2013 and 2014, the biggest rise in recorded history.
