  • Volunteering Surprisingly Makes You Feel Like You Have More Free Time

A couple of years ago, I started helping students with their homework as part of a volunteer program for a Brooklyn nonprofit called 826NYC, which aims to instill a love of writing in kids. Workers who volunteer feel like they have more balance between work and the rest of their lives, according to a study from researchers at the University of Zurich. The findings, which were published this month in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, are based on an analysis of more than 700 workers' responses to survey questions about job demands, time spent volunteering and work/life balance.

  • Can Nonalcoholic Beer Save Big Brewers?

An unlikely star of the brand-name beer industry is beer that doesn't give you a buzz. With options for growth limited to buying craft breweries or creating new craft-like brews, big-name beer makers are looking to corner the market on drinks that have little or no alcohol. "We have seen an upside from nonalcoholic," Heineken CEO Jean-François van Boxmeer told The Huffington Post.

  • Why That 'Like A Girl' Super Bowl Ad Was So Groundbreaking

An ad for pads stole the show during the Super Bowl. Always, one of the biggest makers of feminine care products (the things women use during their period), debuted a 60-second spot during Sunday night’s game, highlighting the brand's “Like A Girl” campaign. The ad may be the first time a feminine care product was advertised during the Super Bowl and is a prominent example of how companies trying to woo women customers are shifting advertising tactics.

  • Target To Close All 133 Stores In Canada

Target is pulling out of Canada, the retail giant announced Thursday. The decision comes after a review by company executives found that Target Canada wouldn’t become profitable until at least 2021, according to a statement by Brian Cornell, the company’s CEO. “We have determined that it is in the best interest of our business and our shareholders to exit the Canadian market and focus on driving growth and building further momentum in our U.S. business,” Cornell said in the statement, noting that it was “a very difficult decision.” About 17,600 people work at Target Canada.

  • Why That Controversial McDonald's Ad Might Actually Work

McDonald’s latest strategy to get more people in the door: Pull at your heart strings. The chain, plagued by a rut of sluggish sales, unveiled a new ad Sunday evening during the NFL playoffs and the Golden Globes featuring McDonald’s signs from across the country with feel-good messages like “thank you veterans” and “keep jobs in Toledo.” Critics were swift to deride the spot, creating a parody, calling it “tone deaf” and using Twitter to note the irony of a chain highlighting its role in helping the community when it's constantly embroiled in labor protests and criticism for marketing unhealthy food to kids. With chains like Five Guys, Shake Shack and even Chipotle offering quick, fresh and relatively cheap alternatives to McDonald’s, the most salient reasons for many to order a Big Mac are nostalgia and familiarity.
